Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center specializes in podiatry, a field of healthcare devoted entirely to the study and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg (below, but not including, the knee). Podiatrists, such as Dr. Nellas, are highly trained specialists who provide medical and surgical treatment of foot and ankle conditions. Podiatrists commonly treat a wide range of conditions ranging from ingrown toenails, calluses, hammertoes and ankle sprains to complex problems such as repairing flat foot deformities, tendon ruptures, bunion deformities, repairing fractures and performing amputations.
After college, Podiatrists attend one of seven podiatric schools in the country where they earn their doctorate degree, doctor of podiatric medicine. Most podiatrists go on to complete additional training in hospital-based residency programs. Podiatrists are required to take state and national exams and be licensed in the states in which they practice. Dr. Nellas’ training after podiatry school included completing a 3-year podiatric surgical residency; where part of his 3rd year was spent completing a trauma fellowship in Vienna, Austria.
