Bunions Q & A

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a small bony bump that develops on the side of your toe. Although bunions are often mistaken for corns or calluses, a bunion is actually the result of changes to the structure of your foot. A bunion occurs when the bones in the front of your foot begin to move out of place, causing your big toe to bend inward. Over time, this bending causes the joint at the base of the big toe to stick out, resulting in a bunion.

What causes bunions?

In most cases, your risk for developing bunions is based on the shape of your foot. Certain inherited foot types are more prone to developing bunions than others. Factors like wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes and high heels can also increase your risk of bunions. People with rheumatoid arthritis are also at a higher risk of developing bunions.

What are the symptoms of a bunion?

Common symptoms of bunions include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain or soreness
  • Noticeable bump on the side of your toe
  • Difficulty moving your toe

Bunions frequently cause corns and calluses as your toes rub against each other. Although bunions typically affect the big toe, they can also affect your smaller toes. People with bunions often find it difficult to find shoes that fit without aggravating their condition. If your bunion is causing persistent or ongoing pain that interferes with your daily life, Dr. Nellas and his team can help find the right treatment for you.

How are bunions treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of your deformity. To begin, your doctor conducts a physical examination and X-ray to evaluate the structure of your foot. You should be prepared to discuss your symptoms as well as any steps you take to relieve your pain. Treatment typically begins with conservative measures. Depending on your condition, Dr. Nellas may recommend:

  • Footwear changes
  • Padding
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Orthotics
  • Icing

If your condition causes severe pain or doesn’t improve with conservative treatment, Dr. Nellas offers a number of safe and effective surgical procedures. Bunion surgery can help eliminate your pain and correct the alignment of your toes. To find out which treatment is right for your bunion, book an appointment by phone or online today.
